This collection consists of the speeches, historical sketches, schedule of speaking engagements, letters, and newspapers of Harry Vernon McChesney. The undated speeches and sketches concern the following themes and events: McChesney's candidacy for governor of Kentucky; the dedication of the Battle of Blue Licks monument; Prohibition; laying of the New Capitol cornerstone in Frankfort, Kentucky; Kentucky's state parks; Kentucky's state capitol buildings; Kentucky Society for Crippled Children; history of Frankfort; history of the Y.M.C.A. and the Frankfort Y.M.C.A.; and the American Navy and Frankfort as a "navy town". Dated between Dec. 12, 1904 and Feb. 27, 1905, McChesney's letters to and from Richard Lloyd Jones of Collier's Weekly Magazine concern the election of William Goebel as governor of Kentucky, election laws in Kentucky, and the statute separating whites and blacks at Berea College. Also included in this collection are two Trench and Camp newspapers published by the Y.M.C.A. for troops at Camp Zachary Taylor (Kentucky) during and shortly after World War I. Additionally, there is an undated political newspaper flyer about Prohibition.

Born in Caldwell County, Kentucky in 1868, Harry Vernon McChesney began his career as a teacher in western Kentucky, eventually becoming the Superintendent of Livingston County schools. In 1899, at a political rally in Mayfield, his talent for public speaking impressed William Goebel, who added McChesney to his ticket for the gubernatorial election in the fall.
